I hadn’t uttered those words since I was fourteen, before my mother passed away. Dotty told me she loved me all the time, and I did love her, but I never said the words. That was one thing that haunted me. I should have told her I loved her, she took care of me and helped me. I owed a lot to her, and I never said the words. My response was always, “Me too.” The words wanted to spill out of me so bad with Titan, I tried to hold them in, but he needed to know, and I just had to pray that I wouldn’t lose another person I loved. Titan and Phoenix were all I had left.

“I love you, Jason.” He rested his forehead against mine and closed his eyes.

“No taking it back, McKenzie. You've said it now. There’s no more running. You let me take care of things. You trust me to handle Richards and his son. They are now my business, you handle yours.”

“He's powerful, Jason. I don't want to lose you too.”

“Honey, you have no idea the things I'm capable of. I promise, you won't lose me.”

He kissed me deeply. I didn't realize someone was knocking on the door until he pulled away. “Yeah?”

“We’re all headed to the restaurant. Y'all coming because Phoenix has already threatened Grit’s balls if you don't show up?”

I couldn't help the giggle that slipped out. Titan grinned at me. “We’ll be there,” Titan yelled out, letting my legs down gently. “We better go. Phoenix will be threatening my balls next, and I'm rather attached to them.”

I slipped out of the shower and was drying off while he finished washing. “Shit.”

“What?” he asked, stepping out of the small shower.

“I've got no panties. The truck is at the house and my other pair are totally useless.”

“Mmmmmmm, yes they are.” Titan nuzzled my neck and grinned like a cat about to trap a canary.

“Titan, about your balls…” I left the threat open so he wouldn't get us caught up again. He had a serious case of greedy hands, and once he touched me, I would be lost again.

We dressed quickly and headed to the restaurant. Everybody was already there when we finally walked in. Guilt assailed me as I looked around at the restaurant and the women who were responsible for keeping it open. I left Phoenix handling everything. Damn, I owed her an apology.

I saw her sitting on Grit’s lap, talking to the Barbie. I really needed to learn that chick’s name, and I would, but first I needed to talk to Phoenix. Titan followed behind me as I walked toward my best friend. There were so many things that needed to be said, but emotion was choking me and guilt pounded me from all sides. Everything I kept hidden from her, never telling her how much I loved her, she was the sister I never had and a part of me, and I never told her that. She got me out of New York, away from a job I hated and a seriously creepy boss.
